Common symptoms of latency include a slight delay whilst recording through the MT 48 into a DAW, or crackling and popping sounds. Below are tips on addressing this.
1. When possible, take advantage of the MT 48's direct monitoring. The MT 48 automatically enables this capability, though can be disabled by using the Mute button on the top of the interface (forcing you to monitor input through your DAW instead). When monitoring through the DAW, you may notice a slight delay especially as effects are introduced.
2. On Windows, you can increase the Buffer Size by right clicking on the MT 48 Agent in your system tray and selecting Open Driver Panel. On the Buffer Size tab, you can adjust the samples as needed:
- If you are noticing a delay, try reducing this setting and retesting.
- If you are noticing signal quality issue (crackling, popping, or dropouts), try increasing this setting and retesting.
The end goal is to find a happy medium. 64 or 128 Samples should be a fine starting point in most cases.
On Mac OS, Buffer Settings are controlled directly within your DAW's Audio Settings.
Make adjustments incrementally and retest to find the best setting.
3. There is an additional Safety Buffer on Mac OS. To access this, go into Finder > Applications > Neumann MT 48.
Go to the Neumann MT 48 dropdown in the top left corner and select Settings.
Enable the Safety Buffer checkbox, and reboot afterward.
When might latency need to be adjusted?
In short: as needed. There is no one right setting, as every use case is different and there are multiple factors that play into latency - the recording computer specs, audio driver settings, project sampling rate and project size, even background programs that are running.
In general, it's not uncommon to reduce the latency/buffer size whilst tracking (or take advantage of direct monitoring), and increase latency once tracking is done and the process of mixing is starting. This is because increasing latency allows your processor more look ahead time to process audio information, especially useful when various audio effect plugins are being introduced.
